Lost or stolen passport
- 01File a police report (boletim de ocorrência) at the nearest police station — it can often be done online.
- 02Contact your country's embassy or consulate immediately.
- 03Bring your document copies, the police report and passport photos.
- 04Request an emergency travel document if your flight is close.
- 05Inform your airline and travel insurance company.
Stolen phone
- 01Use another device to block the phone remotely and erase your data.
- 02Ask your carrier to block the line and the IMEI number.
- 03Change the passwords of your email, banking and messaging apps.
- 04Log out of WhatsApp and social accounts from another device.
- 05File a police report — it is required for insurance claims.
Stolen wallet or cards
- 01Block every card immediately through the app or the bank's hotline.
- 02Check for unauthorized transactions and report them.
- 03Ask about emergency cash assistance from your bank.
- 04File a police report listing everything that was taken.
- 05Use the backup card and cash you left at your accommodation.
Medical emergency
- 01Call 192 (SAMU) or go to the nearest emergency room (pronto-socorro).
- 02Public emergency care is free for everyone, including foreigners.
- 03Contact your travel insurance as soon as possible for private hospitals.
- 04Keep every receipt and medical report for reimbursement.
- 05Carry a note with allergies, medication and blood type.
If you are robbed
- 01Do not resist. Objects can be replaced; your life cannot.
- 02Hand over what is requested calmly and avoid sudden movements.
- 03Do not chase the offender or shout for help while they are still near.
- 04Move to a safe, busy place and call 190.
- 05File a police report and notify your insurance and consulate.
Beach and water emergencies
- 01Swim only near lifeguard posts and respect the flags and signs.
- 02Caught in a rip current: don't fight it, swim parallel to the shore.
- 03Never swim after drinking alcohol or alone at night.
- 04Call 193 for the Fire Department, who handle water rescues.
- 05Keep children within arm's reach at all times.
